Abstract

In this article, we analyze the way children read images in the children's book "Tibi and Joca - a two worlds adventure", that is built primarily by a sequence of illustrations and comics’ features. Claudia Bisol authors the book, with illustrations by Marco Scene. The empirical material for the analyses comprises a transcription of 3 sessions of joint reading carried out by three groups of primary school students. We presented the plot with slides to the children, so that they could interpret the narrative. The analysis of their participation allowed us to perceive distinct ways of reading the images, which possibly occurs because the children have different levels of acquaintance with comics’ features. Another reason is the multiplicity of meanings that images are able to convey, in comparison to words. We drew our analysis on recent reading studies, children's literature and comics theory.
