Agricultural policies in the Acrean Amazon: agriculture and environment between development paradigms

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the agricultural policies in the Acrean Amazon, on the threshold of the 21st century, from categories such as agriculture and environment, focused on regional development paradigms that range from “sustainable development” to policies related to the expansion of agribusiness. Under a qualitative approach, the research was conducted based on portals and official documents, governmental plans, and news sources, in order to understand the directions and narratives of these agricultural policies. Under these circumstances, the study approaches the regional development policies of the Acrean governments on the threshold of the 21st century, highlighting the governments of Frente Popular do Acre (1999-2018) and the first term of Gladson Cameli (2019-2022). The two governmental administrations, despite several discursive antagonisms regarding development and environmental policies, present convergent processes referring to a modernizing agricultural model expanding in the state of Acre.
