Impositions of the Agribusiness Model on Indigenous Lands: commentary on the Agroindigenous Project in Roraima

Abstract

This article presents a critique of the contradictions and effects of the project known as Agroindigenous Project in the territories and indigenous communities of Roraima. The methodological approach is based on the materialism of the symbolic, associated with ancestral memory, for the contextualization, reflection, and interrogation of data and information from documents, journalistic reports, and discourses about this project. This discussion is relevant for highlighting the national articulations and the link between Agroindigenous Project and the material and symbolic mode of production of Brazilian society, as well as the instruments of territorial dispossession adopted by the dominant classes. The results indicate elements related to the configuration of Agroindigenous Project in its conception, formulation, and implementation as a reproduction of the agribusiness model within indigenous lands. The conclusion highlights the hegemonic power relations involved in the shaping of this project; the incorporation of practices harmful to the systems and methods of production, distribution, preparation, and consumption of food in the communities where it has been implemented; and the mobilization of coercive practices to force adherence to and participation in Agroindigenous Project.
