History of the journal
The history of this journal begins at the end of the last century - the twentieth - and follows the development of the Geography course at FCT-UNESP, which was already showing a good maturity in Brazilian geography as a whole, as well as the first steps of the now consolidated Postgraduate Program in Geography at this unique school. As ideas and, consequently, social debate are essential to the human sciences, the creation of a journal was inevitable. The Revista Geografia em Atos has become the vehicle for disseminating an effusive and energetic academic production since 1999, with the first issue launched, until today, 2024, with 44 issues published, totaling more than 300 published texts.
Curiously, its initial aim was to publish work by undergraduate students. It was soon realized that opening up to all academic levels would be much healthier for the periodic continuity of publications. And so it was. Today, with two decades of existence, the continuity of this good strategy is evident. Students at all levels - from undergraduate to doctoral (and university professors) - publish their reflections and research from all over Brazil, including other countries. It is for these reasons that the journal is called “Geografia em Atos” (Geography in Acts). Acts” is the legitimate expression of praxis, that is, the dialectical and constant relationship between the researcher and the world.
The above-mentioned issues were only possible thanks to the efforts of many people, especially the various professors who worked in the Geography Department. Initially, the management was led by geographers Antonio Thomaz Júnior and Jayro Gonçalves Melo (1999-2000), later by Antonio Thomaz Júnior and Antônio Nivaldo Hespanhol (2000-2001) and then by Antônio Nivaldo Hespanhol: Antônio Nivaldo Hespanhol and Margarete Cristiane de Costa Trindade Amorim (2002), Margarete Cristiane de Costa Trindade Amorim and Rosangela Aparecida de Medeiros Hespanhol (2003), Miguel Gimenez Benites (2006), Eliseu Savério Sposito, Miguel Gimenez Benites, Paulo Fernando Jurado da Silva (2007-2010), Claudemira Azevedo Ito, Rodrigo Cezar Criado, Eliseu Savério Sposito, Paulo Fernando Jurado da Silva (2010-2015), José Mariano Caccia Gouveia (2015-2017) Guilherme dos Santos Claudino and José Mariano Caccia Gouveia (2017-2019), Rizia Mendes Mares and José Mariano Caccia Gouveia (2019-2020), Rizia Mendes Mares, (2020-2021), Rizia Mendes Mares, Roberta Oliveira and Karina Malachias (2021-2023), Rizia Mendes Mares, Karina Malachias and Eda Goes (2024-present).
There is also a principle that has guided Geography in Acts throughout its history: free thinking mediated by scientific rigor. This principle is the reason why Geografia em Atos is a plural journal, which accepts, publishes and disseminates different themes of a geographical nature.
