Abstract

The research described in this article - essentially qualitative in nature and based on a case study - intended to study the potential of the discussion of socio-scientific controversies, through the representation of roles in acquiring knowledge and developing skills necessary for the enjoyment of criticism and participatory. Twenty-five students in a biology class of 12. Grade participated in two role-playing activities that focus on, respectively, in subjects Medically Assisted Procreation and Manipulation of Human Genetic Information. Methodologies of data collection we used the observation of activities, the implementation of a survey of participants, the content analysis of documents where the students presented the basis of the argument used to establish each of the roles played and interviews semi-structured some of the participating students. The documents prepared by students, the answers to the questionnaire, observation records and interview transcripts were subjected to content analysis. The results have revealed that the activities undertaken in this study contributed to capacity development and ownership of knowledge relevant to life and essential to the understanding and discussion of socio-scientific controversies and the exercise of responsible citizenship.
