(Re) teaching brazilian literature: an afrodescendent perspective

The current revival of discussions around racial issues introduces the need to revise the canon to make it more inclusive and also the need to re-read it from a perspective that takes into account the role of Afro-descendants as authors and literary characters in Brazilian literature and culture. The classroom immediately takes on importance as a space for the opening of possibilities for discussions. I present a list of some pedagogical strategies to address this issue. Navigating suggestions for the elaboration of the course program and the practice of discussion in the classroom, I offer here bibliography recommendations and materials related to a pilot survey of Brazilian literature and culture university course in which non-canonical texts are introduced and canonical texts are addressed through discussions of racial issues.
