Similarity_and_Plagiarism_Policy

Revista Geografia em Atos – GeoAtos adopts a rigorous policy to prevent and combat plagiarism, self-plagiarism, and other improper practices related to textual similarity, based on the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Council of Science Editors (CSE), and the FAPESP Code of Good Scientific Practices. This policy aims to preserve academic integrity, the originality of published work, and the trust of the scientific community.

All manuscripts submitted to Revista Geografia em Atos – GeoAtos are screened using similarity-checking tools before being forwarded for peer review. The generated report is analyzed by the editorial team to identify unjustified overlaps with previously published works, whether by the same author (self-plagiarism) or by others (plagiarism).

Plagiarism is defined as the total or partial appropriation of texts, ideas, data, tables, images, or any other intellectual production of others without proper citation or attribution. Self-plagiarism is defined as the significant reuse of material already published by the same author without clear indication of the source and without editorially acceptable justification. Both practices are unacceptable and contrary to scientific ethics.

The use of excerpts from other works must be clearly identified, with quotation marks, citations, and complete references. Unavoidable coincidences in technical or methodological expressions do not constitute plagiarism, provided they are properly contextualized and referenced.

If evidence of plagiarism or self-plagiarism is identified during editorial screening, the manuscript will be returned to the authors for clarification or rejected, depending on the severity. If detected after publication, Revista Geografia em Atos – GeoAtos will issue a retraction or an expression of concern and will notify the involved institutions when necessary.

Authors are fully responsible for the content submitted, including citations and references, and must ensure that all sources are properly attributed and that there is no duplicate publication.

The editorial team and reviewers are also encouraged to report any suspected ethical misconduct they may identify during the review process.

Revista Geografia em Atos – GeoAtos emphasizes that plagiarism and self-plagiarism are serious violations of ethical and legal norms of scientific publication, subject to editorial, academic, and, in some cases, legal sanctions, as provided for in the COPE, CSE, and FAPESP guidelines and current copyright legislation.

This policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure alignment with international best practices and advances in academic integrity monitoring.
