Abstract

Amapá, in the Brazilian Amazon, and the Province of Santa Cruz, in Argentine Patagonia, are considered both frontier territories, as much in terms of the frontier geography as the forms of development. These facts have produced significant conflict situations. The central objective of the research was to analyze capitalist accumulation in the border zone in two provinces/states, one in the north; and the other in the south of the South American continent, concerning the big economic projects and the disputes facing socio-territorial movements. The methodology adopted consisted of a critical review of decolonialism and political ecology theories to characterize the importance of socio-territorial upheavals, carrying out oral interviews, data collection in official agencies, making maps, and using photographic images. The results demonstrate that developmentalist discourses still prevail, both by public representatives of the State and by large companies, leading to the denial or disqualification of those who are either directly affected or deterritorialized; or who fight for the right to a living territory.
