Abstract

Intensified after the Second World War, the process of modernization of agriculture radically altered the relationship between society and nature, which worsened the impacts of agricultural activities. In this way, the expansion of monoculture areas and the practices inherent to their production process, especially regarding the widespread use of pesticides, alters the balance of ecosystems and causes the death of a wide variety of species, which includes, in an especially bees. As the death of bees in the natural environment is difficult to measure, due to the lack of data, in this article we analyze the relationship between the use of pesticides in agriculture and cases of deaths of bees managed for commercial honey production. To do this, we used the “Google Alert” search tool, with which we identified cases of bee deaths in several Brazilian states, with emphasis on the states of São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul.
